Powder Brows Healing Process Day by Day
Powder brows look very dark for the first few days, then flake, then fade, then come back. Each stage has a reason. This guide follows ombré powder brows from the day of your appointment to the healed result at around six weeks, and explains what you can do to help.
The powder brows healing stages
Powder brows, also called ombré brows, are made of tiny dots of pigment shaded into the skin: soft at the front, fuller towards the tail. They heal over roughly six weeks, and almost everyone goes through the same stages in the same order.
- Day 1: the brows look dark and sharp, with some redness.
- Days 2 to 4: the colour is at its darkest and the skin feels tight.
- Days 4 to 10: the shaded area flakes, usually in fine layers rather than thick scabs.
- Days 10 to 14: the brows look much lighter, sometimes patchy.
- Weeks 2 to 4: the colour slowly comes back to the surface.
- Weeks 4 to 6: the colour settles into its healed shade.
Here is what each stage looks like, and what to do and avoid at each point.
Day 1
When you leave the studio, your brows will look darker and more defined than the final result. Shading puts more pigment near the surface than hair strokes do, so the contrast on day one is stronger than with nano brows. Light redness or swelling around the brows is normal and usually goes within a day or two.
Days 2 to 4
This is when most clients message to ask whether their brows will stay this dark. They won't. The pigment is oxidising and the top layer of skin is drying out, so the colour looks much stronger than it will once healed. Keep the area clean and dry, and follow the aftercare instructions you were given at your appointment.
Days 4 to 10
The shaded area starts to flake. With powder brows the flaking is often finer and more even than with hair strokes, a little like light dandruff on the brow. It can itch. Do not pick, rub or peel anything: pigment comes away with the flakes and leaves gaps that will need filling at the top-up.
Days 10 to 14
Once the flakes have gone, the brows can look far lighter than you expected, sometimes greyish or patchy. A thin layer of new skin is covering the pigment and hiding it for now. This stage is normal and it passes.
Worried your brows are not healing the way they should? Send me a photo on WhatsApp and I will tell you honestly whether it is normal healing or something to look at during your top-up.
Weeks 2 to 6
The new skin becomes clearer and the colour shows through again. By weeks four to six the shade has settled. Healed powder brows are softer than on day one, with a gradient that runs from a light front to a more defined tail. This is the result you judge at your top-up.

The 6 to 8 week top-up
Around six to eight weeks after your first session, you come back for a top-up. I check how the pigment has healed on your skin, fill any lighter areas and adjust the shade if needed. At Ska Brows the top-up is booked as a separate £100 session after your ombré powder brows treatment.
How long powder brows last
Shading usually holds longer than hair strokes, including on oily skin, which is why many clients with oily or combination skin choose powder brows. The colour softens over time, so most people book a colour refresh about once a year. At Ska Brows this annual maintenance session is £100.

What to avoid while your brows heal
- Picking, scratching or rubbing the brows, even when they itch
- Heavy sweating, swimming, saunas and steam rooms for the first 10 days
- Make-up and skincare, especially active ingredients, on or near the brows
- Sun on the brows without SPF once they have healed
